The Cowboys’ quarterback situation is unclear going into the draft. Does that mean they’ll take a QB in the draft?
Why wouldn’t it? They coveted Paxton Lynch in the first round eight years ago, and when Tony Romo appeared to be nearing the end of his career, they settled for Dak Prescott in the fourth round.
This time, the Cowboys won’t be able to retain Prescott on the team as he is just one season away from being a free agency. He’ll walk out if that’s his desire.
Because of this, the Cowboys must have a strong backup plan.
It may be Cooper Rush. It may be Trey Lance. Alternatively, perhaps it’s a person they like who finds a place where the Cowboys opt to squat on someone who could take over, if Dak leaves.
The Cowboys need to have someone ready to go in case Prescott signs with a different club, even if it’s only a leverage play. Maybe he will. Again, the Cowboys must be prepared if he does.
There are many who believe that they just acquired Lance in order to hedge against Dak leaving. After a year, they are able to determine whether or not to trust Lance with the work. They will require another person if they are unsure.
If they draft someone who can be that someone else, we’ll find out in 15 days.
