NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV/Gray News) – A football player at Tennessee State University was killed in a hit-and-run early Sunday morning, according to authorities.
The Metro Nashville Police Department said 20-year-old Chazan Page was hit by a driver while crossing Gallatin Pike. The university’s athletics department confirmed Page died after he was struck.
“He helped bring out the best in others with his outstanding leadership on and off the field, positive attitude, and genuine care for the people around him. It is extremely difficult to lose a member of our athletics family, and we mourn the loss of Chazan,” TSU Director of Athletics Dr. Mikki Allen said in a statement. “Chazan Page will be deeply missed by our Big Blue family, as he was a phenomenal young man and leader who made everyone around him better. My thoughts and prayers are with our football student-athletes, coaches, families and friends.”
Police said Page was crossing Gallatin Pike at 1:30 a.m. near Marion Avenue in Nashville when he was hit by a red sedan or a small SUV traveling north on Gallatin Pike at a high rate of speed.
Officials said the involved vehicle will have significant front-end damage.
Page was taken to TriStar Skyline Medical Center where he died.
WSMV reports Page played in 28 career games for TSU, starting all 11 games his last two seasons. He was expected to be an anchor of the offensive line going into his senior season.
Page also played in high school while attending Lipscomb Academy.
The Metro Nashville Police Department is urging anyone with information on the hit-and-run to call Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463. Callers can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward.
