A warrant for the arrest of former Detroit Lions cornerback Cameron Sutton was issued more than three weeks ago, following Sutton’s surrender to police in Tampa, Florida, on a charge of aggravated assault domestic abuse.
Following his release from a Tampa, Florida, jail, former NFL cornerback Cameron Sutton’s lawyers made a statement on Monday, according to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report.
A statement from attorneys Todd Foster and Jason Stechen stated, “On March 31, 2024, Mr. Cameron Sutton voluntarily turned himself into the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.” “He was released on his own recognizance on April 1, 2024.”
The Office of the State Attorney has decided to charge a single misdemeanor after concluding its investigation. In this case, Mr. Sutton and his children’s mother both ask for privacy because they see it as a family issue that has to be resolved as a family.
In a news release issued by the sheriff’s office, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister verified Sutton’s current circumstances and supported the victim following the former cornerback’s surrender.
This man has finally made the wise decision to bring himself in after dodging authorities for weeks. In Hillsborough County, nobody is above the law, and domestic abuse has no place in our society, according to Chronister’s statement. “This woman is in my thoughts as she continues to recover from the horrific acts of this man,”
The troubled former Lions cornerback is accused with domestic violence by strangulation, a third-degree crime that carries a five-year maximum jail term.
The events of the incident started on March 7 at around five in the morning, when the sheriff’s office got a report of continued domestic abuse between Sutton and a female. After the sheriff’s office requested aid in finding Sutton over two weeks ago, the hunt for him became more intense.
