Refusing to cry, Katie Meier made her public speaking debut on Friday, the first since announcing on Thursday afternoon that she would be leaving her position as coach of the University of Miami women’s basketball team. Friends, former players, staff, and media came to commemorate the cherished veteran coach during her news conference at the Watsco Center. Meier was full of gratitude. their futures, and betraying their confidence is never a simple task. I’m so appreciative that I can stay at the U and go on helping, mentoring, leading, and evolving in new ways.
Meier, 56, will take up a new position with Miami Athletics as the Vice President/Director of Athletics’ special advisor. Miami then said that Fitzroy Anthony, an associate head coach, will take over as interim head coach and that a “national search” for Meier’s replacement will soon begin. Meier had many individuals to thank, but there were also many in attendance to express gratitude for her 19 years of service and devotion to the Miami community.
