Pittsburgh — The Pittsburgh Steelers moved Diontae Johnson and Kenny Pickett, signed Russell Wilson, traded for Justin Fields, and strengthened their defense with the additions of Patrick Queen and DeShon Elliott. Free agency has been encouraging for this club, but they don’t look to be finished yet. The Steelers are planning to bring in former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams for a free agency visit, and like with every other move they have considered this offseason, nothing is guaranteed. General manager Omar Khan has been more proactive than any previous GM in franchise history, and it’s difficult to think he’s done now.
Williams, 29, would provide an outside presence for the Steelers, immediately replacing Johnson. Despite returning from a torn ACL, the former first-round choice has two 1,000-yard seasons and 31 career touchdowns. Pittsburgh has already signed Van Jefferson, leaving their projected depth chart at Jefferson, George Pickens, Calvin Austin, and – well, that’s it for now. The Steelers need another receiver and are unlikely to leave it to chance in the NFL Draft. They still have around $10.6 million in salary cap space, and if their chase of Tyler Boyd fails or does not appear promising enough, Williams becomes a name to keep an eye on and appears to be the next signing. Look for more splash. And if Williams believes.
The Steelers are placing themselves in a position to compete, particularly after his trips to the Carolina Panthers and the New York Jets. Look for a signing.
