The backup quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles is now in place. Kenny Pickett is his name, and he might not be the ideal candidate for the position considering who was available.
Pickett is reasonably priced. Marcus Mariota, the former backup, will earn $6 million as a Washington Commander in the upcoming season, while Pickett’s base pay is $985k plus a $988k roster bonus. However, sometimes you get what you pay for, and Philadelphia had the choice to select any one of these three possibilities for a little extra money:
Joshua Dobbs
Dobbs has appeared in eight games for the Steelers and Titans before the previous season. The former aerospace engineering major, however, played for three teams in a single calendar year and was named the starting quarterback of two teams with less than two weeks’ notice in 2023.
With 2,464 yards and 13 touchdowns passed through his hands in 12 games for the Cardinals and Vikings last season, Dobbs finished 3-9. In contrast, Pickett finished with 2,070 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games for Pittsburgh.
Although rumors indicate that Pickett would struggle to transition to a backup position, Dobbs is realistic about not being a full-time starter. Although the former Volunteer’s market value appears to be around $6.7 million annually, in a city like Philadelphia, self-awareness might be invaluable.
Joe Flacco
Born and raised in Audubon, New Jersey, just outside of Philadelphia, Flacco won the MVP award for the Ravens in the 2013 Super Bowl. Before being dealt to the Jets early in the 2021 season, he inked a one-year contract to support Jalen Hurts.
Before being added to the practice squad of the Cleveland Browns in late November of 2023, Flacco was unemployed. After five games and four victories, the seasoned signal-caller was able to secure a spot in the AFC wild-card round.
The Associated Press’ Rob Maaddi reports that Flacco turned down an offer from the Eagles in favor of a $8.7 million, one-year contract with the Colts. Perhaps his local team ought to have given it more.
