ALLEN PARK — The emergency third quarterback rule, which was finally approved by the league last year, originated with the Detroit Lions. In preparation for the upcoming season, they have now suggested four further rule modifications, one of which would allow head coaches to get an additional challenge if just one of their prior two challenges was accepted. At the moment, coaches need to win both challenges in order to advance to the third.
The NFL bylaws were also to be amended by the Lions in three ways, one of which would push back the trade deadline to the Tuesday after Week 10 by two weeks. The plan was supported by the Browns, Jets, Eagles, 49ers, and Commanders in addition to Detroit, indicating that it had a good chance of being approved during the owners meetings later this month.
