Although it has been confirmed that the Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson would be released by the team a few years after joining, Wilson is expected to have a hefty payday.
The 35-year-old, who is still owed his £39 million contract for 2024, was dealt from Seattle to Denver in exchange for a huge haul of players and draft selections. But any money he receives from a different team will be deducted from this total.
Over the following two seasons, the Broncos will also be required to pay a record £89 million in dead cap charges. The Pittsburgh Steelers have previously been mentioned as a potential new home for Wilson, who is a free agent.
Wilson was let go by the Broncos despite his contribution to their season’s turnaround following a dismal beginning, according to rumors that he and the team had a falling out.
Wilson said that if he didn’t postpone his £37 million injury guarantee as stipulated in his contract, the Broncos threatened to sideline him for the remaining nine games. He declined, and after seven more games, he was benched.
At the time, Sean Payton, the head coach, called it a “footballing decision.”
An official joint statement from GM George Paton and Payton stated, “We spoke with Russell Wilson today to inform him of his release after the start of the league year.”
“The Broncos would like to thank Russell for his services to our club and community and wish him the best of luck in his future professional endeavors. Our goal going forward is to assemble the best team we can for the 2024 campaign.
