Former Arsenal defender, Mikael Silvestre has voiced concerns regarding Arsenal’s defensive transfer target Matthijs de Ligt, who presently plays for Bayern Munich.
Arsenal is apparently exploring a deal for the Netherlands international to boost their central defensive department, according to The Athletic.
The Gunners already have the likes of William Saliba and Gabriel in the center defense position.
Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ben White, Jakub Kiwior and Jurrien Timber can also play in the position.
However, Silvestre is not convinced about De Ligt’s possible influence upon landing at the Emirates Stadium.
“I haven’t had the chance to see a lot of De Ligt lately and assess his current form. But it’s apparent that he’s not achieving his potential,” Silvestre told the Esports community GG Recon (via HITC).
“He was unbelievable for Ajax when they reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. But, since then, we have not seen a tremendous progress from Matthijs in terms of his development and that raises some questions.”
“Can he go to the next level? Can he get to the same level as Virgil van Dijk? When you demonstrate so much maturity at a young age, like he did as the captain of Ajax, you expect these players to kick on”, Silvestre added.
